Services for Authors

Whether you are a first-time author or a seasoned writer, a good editor can be the difference between admirable and exceptional. A good editor can help you develop an idea, spot inconsistencies, refine awkward or confusing passages, and produce a clean, error-free manuscript. Missing Piece is proud to provide the following services to authors preparing manuscripts for self-publishing or for submission to agents and publishers.

For All Authors

Copyediting

This service provides a technical edit of the manuscript to ensure an error-free final draft. This service includes:

  • Editing of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax to ensure correctness and consistency.
  • Queries (using MS Word Comments) for unclear or awkward passages and internal inconsistencies.
  • Fact checking (nonfiction and academic projects).
  • Citation and references formatting per Chicago or APA style (nonfiction and academic projects).
  • A style sheet cataloging style and spelling choices for reference.

This service is best for authors who require a final edit before submitting to agents and publishers or before self-publishing.

To request a price quote: Email me a sample (first 10 pages) of your manuscript and your total word count. Pricing varies depending on length of the manuscript (word count) and the level of editing required (light, medium, or heavy).

For Nonfiction and Academic Authors

Partial Manuscript Critique

This service offers initial feedback on a manuscript idea (250-word abstract and table of contents) and a sample chapter (up to 10,000 words). This service includes:

  • A written editorial critique (2–4 pages) that will provide feedback and revision suggestions for organization, style, scope, and marketability.
  • A 30-minute phone or Skype call within 30 days of the editorial critique being sent.

This service is best for authors at the early stages of writing who are looking for broad-stroke advice before diving into writing a full manuscript.

To request a price quote: Contact me with your abstract, table of contents, and sample chapter, as well as any specific concerns you would like addressed in the critique.

Full Manuscript Critique

This service offers broad-stroke and specific feedback on a full manuscript. This service includes:

  • A written editorial critique (4–6 pages) that will provide feedback and revision suggestions for organization, style, scope, and marketability.
  • Light annotation of the manuscript using MS Word Track Changes to point out recurring issues (e.g., repetitious word usage, awkward passages, extraneous content) and suggestions for improvement.
  • A 1-hour phone or Skype conversation within 30 days of the critique and annotated manuscript being sent.

This service is best for authors who have completed and revised their manuscript, but are looking for in-depth professional feedback before submitting for publication.

To request a price quote: Contact me with your table of contents, a sample chapter, as well as any specific concerns you would like addressed in the critique.

Developmental Edit (Full Manuscript Critique + Line Editing)

This service offers the Full Manuscript Critique package, plus in-depth, line-by-line editing. The line edit provides sentence-level feedback on tone, diction, and style. Line editing includes:

  • Revision (using MS Word Track Changes) of: extraneous words or sentences, tangential or confusing passages, clunky transitions, and internal inconsistencies.
  • Queries (using MS Word Comments) throughout the manuscript regarding unclear passages, ideas that require further explanation, and style suggestions.

This service is best for authors with a full manuscript who are looking for in-depth writing advice and manuscript clean-up. More than just the Full Manuscript Critique, the line edit addresses the successes and issues with the writing at the sentence and paragraph level. This edit will not only improve the manuscript's quality, but will also provide valuable writing advice to inform your future work.

To request a price quote: Contact me with your table of contents, a sample chapter, as well as any specific concerns you would like addressed in the critique.
